Die Landwirtschaft → Kapitel: 6.6
Status quo der bewässerten Landwirtschaft in Deutschland
Jacob Jeff Bernhardt
Summary
Status quo of irrigated agriculture in Germany:
Ever since the drought years from 2018 to 2022 – which led to crop yield losses and regional conflicts over water use in many parts of Germany—the topic of »irrigated agriculture« has been gaining prominence on the political agenda. Whether and how irrigation is used in Germany depends on crop water demand and regional water availability, as well as on the economic profitability of irrigation technology investments and operational costs.
Climate change increases the irrigation demand by shifting precipitation patterns to the winter months and prolonging dry periods during the growing season. This alters the economic profitability of irrigation and puts pressure on water resources. As a result, regional water use conflicts are already emerging. And irrigation is expanding: since 2009, the irrigated area has increased by 24%, now accounting for about 5% of total agricultural land.
The volume of fresh water consumed is also rising. The status quo of irrigation is largely determined by a range of factors – such as the crops grown, the technology used, and the water source. These factors shape existing irrigation areas in very specific ways. Irrigation can serve as an adaptation measure to climate change, but it also requires careful balancing of yield, costs, and sustainable water use.
