Thomas Foken, Bernd Huwe & Almut Arneth

Summary

The energy and water balance of soils and their climatological significance: The article describes the physical fundamentals of the interactions between the atmosphere and the vegetated and non-vegetated soil. Energy exchange at the surface and water transport in soil are discussed. Numerical data and simple diagrams are used to show how changes in land cover affect local and, where appropriate, regional climate.
