Kapitel: 2.4 → Änderung der Landnutzung durch die europäische Erorberung Amerikas

Dieter Kasang

Summary

Change in land use due to the European conquest of America: The conquest of America in the 16th century not only led to the elimination of the majority of the original population of the Americas, but also to a significant change in land use and land cover with possible consequences for the global climate. However, the quantitative assessment of the processes involved confronts researchers with almost unsolvable problems, since reliable data on the original population and agricultural area as well as on the decimation of the Indian population and the abandoned agricultural area are largely lacking. The opinion of some researchers that a new geological age began already with the conquest of America, called the Anthropocene, rests therefore on an uncertain database.
