Changes of glaciers in Switzerland:
In Switzerland, the advances and retreats of glaciers are determined systematically with various methods since the end of the 19th century. The article gives a short overview of the climatic conditions for the present distribution of the ice masses.
The numbers of glaciers under observation and the relative shares of retreating, stationary and advancing glaciers are discussed for the last 130 years, both for total numbers and for different area intervals.
For selected glaciers with different periods of observation – from 25 to 110 years – the mass changes are presented. A short preview is given in the end.
