Phytoplankton change in the North Sea:
For the North Sea trends in phytoplankton parameters could be attributed to SST rise and meteorological changes (e.g. NAO). CPR data display shifts in phytoplankton distribution, abundance, phenology and an increasing appearance of subtropical species.
To date ocean acidification shows no negative impact on the phytoplankton. The compilation of alien phytoplankton species is still surprisingly short. Mostly subtropical warm-water species are transported into the North Sea by ocean currents.
A case study in waters of the Sylt Wadden Sea (Lter Sylt Roads) revealed important changes within the phytoplankton community in parallel to rising SST and decreasing eutrophication.
