Summary
Climate stressors affecting agriculture with examples from Central Europe and Africa:
The focus is on the implications of human-induced climate change for agriculture. Examples from Central Europe and Africa are used to illustrate how changes in average climate conditions and in the intensity and frequency of extreme events affect risk factors for agriculture. Following a synopsis of typical climate stressors relevant to agriculture, issues are presented that are of central importance for agricultural practice.
These include the problem of late frosts, irrigation requirements for crops, crop yield, adaptation needs regarding the range of varieties, and changed risks for plant diseases. The research results presented were obtained based on various meteorological and non-meteorological observational data as well as high-resolution regional climate model projections. The applied RCP8.5 emission scenario deliberately depicts a pessimistic climate vision, which must be prevented at all costs, not least to maintain food security on our planet.
