Global extension and economical consequences of the El Niño-Phenomenon:

El Niño holds a key role regarding global atmospheric variability. Because climate affects both, nature and human life, the global consequences of the phenomenon are in the focus of interdisciplinary research activities.

Thus, the section presents the most important atmospheric teleconnections of the El Niño phenomenon. Due to the fact that in human life El Niño is always associated with catastrophic events, socio-economic implications of the phenomenon will be discussed.

Here, agriculture and food industry are the economic sectors which are mainly affected by losses in areas of droughts and heavy rainfalls during ENSO. But it will be emphasized that other economic sectors can also benefit from an El Niño-event.
