Climate change and the need of a justice formula:
Climate change produces three types of justice challenges. Firstly, the impacts of climate change will affect countries and regions very differently. Many highly affected countries did not contribute to global warming. Secondly, climate change is resulting in a new human rights discourse.
Global warming beyond the 2 ° Celsius threshold is undermining basic human rights: water will become a scarce resource for many people, access to food will be difficult in many regions. The drivers of global warming are already indicted in several international fora as being responsible for human rights violations of a new type.
Thirdly, there remains the question in the international climate negotiations about burden sharing in the process of reducing greenhouse gases internationally. A justice formula is needed in order to be able to agree on an international climate regime.
