Using Satellites to Analyse the Urban Climate.
The development of satellite based Earth Observation contributed to our understanding of urban climate and revolutionized the possibilities of large scale monitoring. Particularly two types of satellite data are used. Firstly, thermal infrared (TIR) sensors allow the direct observation of surface temperatures and therefore surface urban heat islands.
Secondly, multispectral satellite images and active LIDAR sensors are used to observe the characteristics of urban surfaces at different scales. These data provide crucial information for urban climate models.
