Prerequisite for effective climate protection:
The traffic turnaround in the cities – Transport is a growing problem for climate protection, because it is still almost entirely based on fossil fuels. Since road traffic, in particular, takes up a lot of space, the call for more space justice in the city is becoming louder. This is why there is increasing pressure to initiate a comprehensive traffic turnaround.
This includes not only a change in drive technology with the aim of decarbonisation, but also a change in user behaviour. At the same time, the inertia is also great. The transport infrastructure as well as settlement structure and life style of a large part of society have been geared towards the private automobile for decades. There is therefore a high path dependence.
A traffic turnaround goes far beyond a drive turn. It means a fundamental urban and settlement redevelopment. It needs a changed legal and fiscal framework and also a comprehensive cultural change. Realistically, the turnaround begins with small steps. The first step is to gather experience in pilot projects and experiments and to illustrate alternative mobility solutions.
