Extreme drought in Mediterranean area:
Due to the geographical location of the Mediterranean area with predominance of anticyclonic conditions during summer, summertime precipitation deficit and extreme drought are characteristic for many parts of the region. However, extreme drought periods can also occur during the wet winter season.
The drought periods are related to persistent large-scale high pressure anomalies and usually affect a large spatial area. Projections until the end of the 21st century point to an increase in frequency and intensity of drought periods.
