Summary: Invasive plant species in Germany
The anthropogenic floristic change is an already long lasting and ongoing process. A particular problem is the introduction and spread of invasive alien plant species, which can threaten biological diversity as well as human health and economy. Numerous scientific studies investigated invasion processes and the causes for the success of plant invaders.
Although no general rule could be found, the knowledge obtained about their biological traits and other factors like climate change allows the determination of these species, which are already invasive or are likely to become invasive in the future.
There is a social consensus, that the threat of biological diversity by invasive species should be counteracted. Several international and national legal provisions and conventions have been decided with the aim, to prevent or minimise adverse impacts of invasive alien species.
