Das Jahr 2023 war ein extremes Jahr im Mittelmeerraum, mit mehreren massiven Hitzewellen an Land und im Ozean, erheblicher Trockenheit und zahlreichen Waldbränden. Gleichzeitig entsprachen die Verhältnisse weitestgehend den seit Jahrzehnten projizierten Auswirkungen des Klima- und Landnutzungswandels in der Region.

Obwohl präzise Abschätzungen noch ausstehen, kann von mehreren Tausend Toten ausgegangen werden, insbesondere durch die Hitzewellen und die damit verbundene Luftverschmutzung. Der Bedarf an Anpassung, insbesondere für die ökonomisch benachteiligten Teile der Bevölkerung, ist trotz vorhandener Anstrengungen erheblich.

Die beobachteten Klimafolgen in der Region machen deutlich dass eine radikale Emissionsminderung weltweit unvermeidlich ist, wenn weitere Schäden an Menschen, Natur und Ökonomie vermieden werden sollen.

The year 2023 was an extreme year in the Mediterraneanregion, with several massive heatwaves on land and in the ocean, considerable drought and numerousforest fires. At the same time, the conditions largely corresponded to the effects of climate and land use change inthe region that have been projected for decades.

Although precise estimates are still pending, it can be assumed thatseveral thousand people died, particularly as a result of the heatwaves and the associated air pollution. The needfor adaptation, particularly for the economically disadvantaged sections of the population, is considerable despiteexisting efforts.

The climate impacts observed in the region make it clear that a radical reduction in emissions worldwideis unavoidable if further damage to people, nature and the economy is to be avoided.
