In diesem Artikel werden vom 4. Jahrtausend v. Chr. bis heute exemplarisch die Auswirkungen des Städtewachstums auf das Umland analysiert. Am Anfang stehen die Betrachtung erster urbaner Zentren in Mesopotamien, die Umlandveränderungen des spätbronzezeitlichen Trojas sowie griechischer und römischer Städte.
Danach fragen wir nach den Zusammenhängen zwischen mittelalterlichen Städten, ländlichem Umland und Rohstoffen. Der dritte Abschnitt betrachtet das Städtewachstum seit der frühen Neuzeit und der Industrialisierung mit den wesentlichen Auswirkungen auf die Zentren selbst und das Umland.

Effects of urban growth on the surrounding area from ancient times to modern times: In this article the effects of urban growth on the surrounding area from the 4th millennium BC until today will be analyzed. At the beginning stand the consideration of the first urban centers in Mesopotamia, the changes in the surrounding area of the Late Bronze Age Troy as well as Greek and Roman cities.
Then we ask about the connections between medieval cities, rural surroundings and raw materials. The third section looks at urban growth since early modern times and industrialization with the main effects on the cities themselves and the surrounding area.

Efectos del crecimiento urbano en el área circundante desde la antigüedad hasta los tiempos modernos: En este artículo se analizarán los efectos del crecimiento urbano en el área circundante desde el 4to milenio aC hasta la actualidad. Al principio destacan la consideración de los primeros centros urbanos de Mesopotamia, los cambios en los alrededores de la Tardía Edad de Bronce de Troya, así como las ciudades griegas y romanas.
Luego preguntamos sobre las conexiones entre las ciudades medievales, el entorno rural y las materias primas. La tercera sección analiza el crecimiento urbano desde los primeros tiempos modernos y la industrialización con los principales efectos en las propias ciudades y sus alrededores.
