Urban climate studies in selected German cities:
The urban areas in Germany are also particularly vulnerable to weather-related extreme events. Many German cities are already facing major challenges to cope the consequences of climate change and adapt to climate change, while at the same time to satisfy the high demand for housing and urban infrastructure. They are therefore called upon to develop integrated forward-looking strategies for climate protection and early adaptation to climate change.
The German Weather Service (DWD) supports and advises cities and municipalities on issues of climate change and their consequences for people and society. The aim of urban climate research at the DWD is to build decision-relevant knowledge on climate change and climate adaptation in cities and municipalities.
In cooperation with selected municipalities, urban climate projects on various issues were carried out. Based on the examples of Stuttgart, Mainz and Wiesbaden, the results of urban climate investigations on the subject of heat stress are presented in this chapter.
