Improvement of air quality and reduction of noise in cities:
The urgently needed living space in growing agglomerations is primarily realized through inner urban development. To develop compact and mixed used urban quarters with high standards of air quality and noise protection, good solutions of urban planning and design are required. A noise sensitive urban development needs closed urban structures, as for example perimeter block development or other noise shading measures.
For air quality ventilation, especially through fresh air corridors, within the urban quarters as well as areas for fresh air generation are important. To bring these divergent needs in urban development in accordance is a major task for urban planning. However, the conflict of goals will not be solved by urban development only.
The most important field of action to improve air quality and reduce noise is traffic. Measures to reach a transformation in traffic create synergies for both air quality control and noise protection.
